I have been teaching reading and basic language skills in the Berkshires working with students from first grade to college for over 20 years.
I got into this work because one of my sons was identified as dyslexic and there was no one in my area that was available to work with him. So I went to Columbia University Teachers’ College and got trained in one of the best programs in the country, then known as Literacy through Multisensory Teaching (an Orton-Gillingham based approach).
I later got my master’s in Literacy and Reading at Simmon’s College, which enhanced my understanding of the reading research as well as specific techniques. A few years later I got another master’s, this time in Assistive Technology for Special Needs in Education. I came away with a much clearer understanding of the assistive tools that are available, though these resources are constantly changing, and hopefully improving.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing my students’ confidence grow as they realize their struggles in reading are not because they are dumb or lazy, but just that they needed a different way in. They begin to understand, trust, and respect their own minds.
I have a private practice, and am contracted by public and private schools and individuals.
